When Love Touches God...

"There is an essential connection between experiencing God, loving God, and trusting God. You will trust God only as much as you love Him, and you will love Him to the extent you have touched Him, rather than He has touched you." ~ Bernard Manning

When I read the above quote...I had to "sit" on it for a while in order to grasp how my love enables me to "touch God".  Oh...I can understand how my trust in God is related to his love for me and mine for Him...but I never considered before today how the extent of my love for God... is what allows my love to touch Him.

So how does my love touch God?

I think it happens every time I approach Him with my heart, spirit and soul fully in love with Him. It happens when I admire Him... enjoy Him...delight in Him.

The very nature of God requires love...and so it is in my experiencing a pure love for God that allows me to touch Him.

Amazing...when I have touched God...His love consumes me and my love for God connects my trusting in Him...completely.

I love the image of me so in love, belonging only to the Beloved...reaching out and touching Him. I think God loves it even more!  - Glory!

Thankful for Adversity?

"It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn Your statutes." - Psalm 119:71

We all want a trouble free life. I mean...who ever prays for adversity? Yet... adversity is a very common visitor in all our lives.

I know that God is sovereign, so when troubles come my way...my first petition in prayer is for the Lord to free me from all the entanglements it is causing! When my troubles do not disappear...my thoughts and prayers may linger back to words for His resolution to my distress, but, I also begin to pray for the Lord to reveal what He has purposed in my having this adversity.

You see...I believe if the Lord is allowing adversity...He has a purpose in it. I have learned God can be trusted in providing His courage to meet any challenge life brings... giving generously His wisdom and strength as well.

Oh, I may think I desire to live the remainder of my life within the confines of my "comfort zone" without one more adverse "thing" touching me. It even sounds like a reasonable request until I consider the fact that I can't recall one time I called out for God to give me His strength to endure my comfort!

So, I have to wonder...how weak in faith would I become if I never needed God's strength again?  Isn't it even possible, that my continual comfort would become so common to my life as to cause me to forget how sweet its relief feels after a battle won with adversity?

The example set by the apostle Paul gives me great encouragement to seek God's purpose in my troubles. When he suffered, he also prayed that God would take it away. God's answer was, instead of taking it away, giving Paul His grace to live with the adversity. Paul shares with us how he understood; When he was weak in himself, he was strong in Christ (2 Corinthians 12:10).

I want to respond like Paul did...  in that, he was able to recognize a positive outcome from his adversity.

It's natural to ask God to solve the adversities in this life and desire it's resolution. However, I desire for it to be just as natural in me to be found asking God;

"Lord, please show me something in this adversity for which I can be thankful to You for... Something I wouldn't have experienced... without the pain."

"God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks to us in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: It is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world."  - C. S. Lewis

Can God be Trusted?

"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."
- Romans 15:13

A friend recently posted on her FaceBook page the above Scripture. I was  instantly reminded of how this verse in Romans was my constant prayer for months after Brad died. I was feeling the loss of all hope of ever knowing joy and peace again...this side of Heaven.

As I prayed this verse...my heart pleaded with God to "fill me" once again with joy and peace..though I doubted it was possible.

I felt my hope had been dropped and shattered...leaving only it's remnant inside me like a bunch of scattered pieces across my broken spirit.

As I prayed with the smallest of faith...the Lord answered my plea with one of His own to me. He spoke to my heart how He desired to fill me with more joy and peace than I could ever hold inside of me...but there was something very important I needed to do in order to keep what I received.

I needed to trust in Him.

God did not say.. I need to try and understand His ways.

The Lord made very clear to my heart that He was encouraging me to trust Him by reminding me how my faith in Jesus was my anchor throughout the highs and lows of Brad's illness and death. He encouraged me to draw on the power of the Holy Spirit's wisdom inside of me to help me to trust Him now.

Trusting God was what I need most.

I needed to trust that He had not forsaken me when sorrow and grief came rushing in and crushed against my spirit till it nearly broke. I needed to trust that in all my most devastating circumstances it is God's own Hand that is holding me together and tightly to Himself. I needed to trust that He would fill me with His hope, joy and peace...no matter what comes my way in this life. I needed to trust God that He will come one day for me for me too...and I will live with Him forever.

As I prayed, I began to realize I needed to shift from only trusting God through the filter of what my circumstances are...to trusting God completely...regardless of my circumstances.

But how could I ignore painful circumstances and the feeling of betrayal when God allows such heartache?

You see, in my grief and sorrow I had begun to question God's goodness when the circumstances of my life...were anything but good!  If; "God is good...all the time." I wondered, "where was His goodness in this?"

As I was struggling with "unbelief" in the way I trusted God, I knew I needed to pray for greater trust in Him. I could hardly stand the thought of what my heart was considering... that God's love had failed me when He didn't give me the answers my heart pleaded with Him earnestly for...to heal and restore Brad to me.

In the months following Brad's death...I prayed many things...but, my fervent prayer became; "Lord, increase my trust in you." I knew my greatest need above all others...was to fully trust the Lord.

God is faithful! As each day and night unfolded He revealed to my seeking spirit through prayer, reading my Bible, and the wise counsel of godly friends...His trustworthiness. As my trust in God's goodness and loving kindness increased and grew strength...my hope returned.

With my hope restored...my spirit has become a vessel of God's abundant joy and peace anchored in trusting in His goodness over any of this life's troubles. The overflow of joy and peace the Lord fills me with each day, produces in me the evidence of a greater hope and joy in the Lord...because I trust Him completely.

With fully trusting in the Lord...I have a peace that overcomes my greatest fears and doubts of what the future may hold...

I not only trust God...I'm sticking with Him!

Lamentations 3:19-24 The Message

"I’ll never forget the trouble, the utter lostness,
the taste of ashes, the poison I’ve swallowed.
I remember it all—oh, how well I remember—
the feeling of hitting the bottom.
But there’s one other thing I remember,
and remembering, I keep a grip on hope:

God’s loyal love couldn’t have run out,
his merciful love couldn’t have dried up.
They’re created new every morning.
    How great your faithfulness!
I’m sticking with God (I say it over and over).
    He’s all I’ve got left."

Living the Kind of Life Christ Lived.

During my quiet time this morning with the Lord, my heart spoke of the struggles I'm having with how increasingly "mean-spirited" people seem to be towards anyone who doesn't see things as they do. The cutting and biting remarks are easily spoken and shared on just about every news program and are tossed about freely even from a friend's Facebook page; without any regard as to whither their words are offending someone they actually consider to be a friend!

So, I asked the Lord to reveal to my heart what I am suppose to do with all of this meaness in the world. How should I respond when someone offends me or offends my values.  What kind of life am I called to live in a "mean" world ?

In God's Word I found my answer....

I am not called to love others because they agree with me. I am to love even those who believe the exact opposite of what I do.

I do not need to wonder why and worry about what others have said or done against me or my values. I need only be concerned with the word of my mouth, the thoughts of my heart, and my actions towards other to be a reflection of Christ.

I have discover one of God's greatest blessings in this life.

I don't have to live my life under the pressure of being someone who must try to please the fickleness of this ever changing world. I have found how to feel at peace with my enemies and can even endure the suffering of hardships with confidence in God's goodness, all because I have Jesus' love living in me.

There is so much more to living a wonderful life than living it as if I am at the center of it all. The less I become…the more of Christ becomes who I am... and the greater my contentment. The greater my contentment in Christ...the more often I get a glimpse of Jesus and can share His presence with others.

Glory!

"This is the kind of life you’ve been invited into, the kind of life Christ lived. He suffered everything that came his way so you would know that it could be done, and also know how to do it, step-by-step.

He never did one thing wrong,
Not once said anything amiss.

They called him every name in the book and he said nothing back. He suffered in silence, content to let God set things right. He used his servant body to carry our sins to the Cross so we could be rid of sin, free to live the right way. His wounds became your healing. You were lost sheep with no idea who you were or where you were going. Now you’re named and kept for good by the Shepherd of your souls." ~ 1 Peter 2:21-25  The Message (MSG)

Why Church?

As a child I grew up attending church and I was baptized when I was 9 years old on a Easter morning. I recall my faith as a child as being one where I knew God was real and that Jesus loved me. I believed Jesus died on a cross for my sins...and 3 days later arose...ensuring my own eternal destiny in Heaven through faith in Christ.

When I was a teenager I stopped attending church...which means I ended my education and my understandings in the things of God. When I stopped attending church, I not only stopped receiving godly teachings but it also ended my experiencing and seeing the application of these teachings in how they would direct the path God intended for me to walk upon.

The results of my no longer being a part of a church family was this...instead of my morals, my actions and my thoughts being transformed by God...my morals, my actions, and my thoughts were transformed by who I decided God was according to what an unbelieving world taught me about God.

Instead of being encouraged by the teachings and support of a church family to discover and enjoy God's perfect love which satisfies the soul....I was encouraged by the teachings of the world to enjoy and desired any kind of love that makes you feel good. This kind of love I discovered could never fully satisfy the longings of my heart and left my very soul always in search for something more.

Thankfully...God is patient and God is faithful.

I was 39 years old and I thought my life was "perfect"! I was happily married, both my parents were alive and well and I had lots of fun friends. My husband Brad and I had careers we loved and we both were making great money that allowed us not to worry about paying bills and enough extra to save and spend on things we wanted. To me...I had it all...but instead of feeling secure and content...I was full of fear. I feared losing one "thing" of my perfect life. I feared the death of a loved one more than anything else...but the loss of my financial security was high as well.

It was in this fear...that I finally turned to the only One who could help me. So I prayed and Jesus answered my fear in His perfect love. Before my head lifted or my tears stopped flowing...I knew in my heart I needed to return to church.
I knew by God's wisdom and grace that my confidence, my security, my understanding and all my resolve to remain faithful to God...would be found and met there.

My husband who had never attended church amazingly was not only willing to go to church with me, but wanted to go! He was a professional photographer at the time and had shot a wedding at a church where the minister was someone he instantly liked and he felt we would "fit in". So that's where we went.

The first few months we attended church we met many friendly and kind people there who we were amazed to discover seemed... "normal"!

The sermons were ones that applied Bible verses to the circumstances in our life or gave us godly direction as to how we could respond to our circumstances with God's wisdom and love instead of our own.

We began attending a Sunday Bible study class at church and bought a Life Application Bible to read and study at home...both of these things helped us develop a clearer understanding of not only God...but how God wanted us to respond to His teachings and His Will for our lives.

Being with a church family gave us the support we desperately needed to make some pretty drastic changes in our perception of how we saw many social issues as well as how we saw ourselves and others. Developing strong friendships with other Christians through our church gave us the kind of friends God knew we would be needing not only for the good times in life, but during times of great trials and heartache...that this life surely brings to us all.

God's church is where Brad and I discovered our need and desire  to continue in our   understanding of God and His Word. Church is also where we learn how God had designed us to serve and live for Christ...instead of living and serving only our own selfish desires.

We began serving in small ways at first. I signed up to greet people at the doors of church on Sunday mornings while Brad signed up to serve communion. We both joined the choir which led Brad eventually into singing on a praise team and even filling in for the music minister on occasion.

Eventually and as God designed for Brad to do...Brad  left his successful photography business and enter the ministry as a Music and Worship minister.

Me... I became involved in attending women's bible studies that led me into leading them. Eventually...as God has designed me to do...I accepted the opportunity to teach adult Bible studies on Sundays as well as continue to lead women's studies during the week.

Wow...it amazes me to this day what God accomplishes through His church! As a teenager and throughout much of my adult life I rejected the church and what I assumed it was teaching. I thought I wasn't rejecting God by rejecting His church. But I was wrong.

As I look back, I know that my need for God that night 20 years ago included my need for His church and His people. God answered my need for Him, by providing me through His church the means to discover and become who I am in Christ.

Glory!

Remembering 9/11...A People United

On this day in 2001...Our country was never more united. We were united in our shock and horror...we were united in our anguish and pain...we were united in our fear and uncertainty...

September 11, 2001...our country discovered how horrific hate can become...yet, on that day...we also discovered how great love really is. We experienced how love will always conquer over the evils of hate.

We quickly became united that day in our   outreach and sacrificing for others...we were united in our compassion and love which made us united in our resolve to be our brother's keeper and to protect all life.

On this day in 2001...our country discovered our greatest need was God...and our country was united in prayer...not only churches were filled...but, our very streets were filled with people praying.

Our country today...can not forget the horror of that morning...nor the precious lives of thousands that were taken. Our country will never forget the courage and sacrifice of those who placed their own lives in danger to protect their fellow citizen.

On this day in 2001... Our country discovered something else even more precious than all of this. We discovered our greatest strength and the courage to stand against such evil was to be found with all of us as a nation on her knees...crying out to God...the only One who can save us.

As you give remembrances of this day...I pray you will recall not only where you were and what you were doing...and how you felt...but recall your desperate need for God that day...recall your prayers...or at least recall your need for God’s help...and give thanks to the only God who saves...

Our need as a nation for God is no less today. Amazingly...Astonishingly... God has remained faithful to us...even when we have been faithless to Him.

May God Bless America...always.

Kathy

2 Corinthians 4:16
The Message (MSG)
So we’re not giving up. How could we! Even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes by without his unfolding grace. These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times, the lavish celebration prepared for us. There’s far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are here today, gone tomorrow. But the things we can’t see now will last forever.

"In The Details"

"You comprehend my path...and are acquainted with all my ways.”
-Psalm 139:3

I love that about God....that He is into the details...not just the generalities of our lives!
The Scriptures continually reminds me that God has an eye for detail...even knowing the precise number of hairs on each of our heads (Luke 12:7).

We read in the Book of Psalms where David shares with us just how detail oriented God is. David writes that nothing is hidden from God's understanding...He knows everything about us...Psalm 139.
I use to wallow in the miseries of too many details...I could easily become overwhelmed by them if they came at me in number and especially if they seemed to come all at once!

Yes, I prefer my life to be simple...with only a few manageable details needing my attention. But life isn’t like that...at least not all the time it isn't.

So, I am learning to relinquish whatever faith I am placing in my own strength, abilities, and outcome...and replacing it instead with an unswerving faith in the One who holds all of creation in His hands....including all the intricate details of my life!

It is good to be reminded that God is not overwhelmed or discouraged about the current circumstances in my life...or in yours either. His eyes are always on us. Amazingly...we have even captured His heart!

Take to heart this truth...no matter what is currently going on in your life...He loves you! How can you be certain of that love?  You can be certain, because He chose to reveal His love, not in words, but in blood...giving us the gift of eternal life through His Son Jesus Christ!

If God loves us that much...will He not love us enough to sustain us in the midst of all the overwhelming details that life has you experiencing today?

Trust Him in the details. He has a knack for covering them all...

Glory!

Triumph Over Troubles

"...Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity? In all this Job did not sin with his lips."  ~ Job 2:10

Perhaps you can relate if you have lost someone you love greatly.

I have accumulated several dreaded "special" dates!  Most of these days on the calendar were ones that I once celebrated with great happiness...and one...it is marked by my husband’s death.
Ever since Brad died...I have assigned these dates a place of sorrow in my heart instead of a song.

March 1 ~ Our Wedding  Anniversary
May 25 -        Brad's Birthday
June 12 -         My Birthday
September 1-         Brad Died

I am usually a pretty optimistic and cheerful person. So, to be honest with you...I’ve grown tired of “dreading” when these dates show up on the calendar. It wears me out!

The last four years during these days mentioned above, I have had the tendency to remember and dwell on only the bad and setting aside the good. I focus on the troubles of my heart and not the triumph God has given me over them.

So starting with this 4th anniversary of my husband’s death I wanted to try something different! I prayed and asked the Lord to help me "re-train" my thoughts when recalling Brad's last days...and especially the day he died. I knew I needed to focus on the journey through the trials which has lead to triumph over troubles instead of the bad which befell Brad and I in them!

I went to the Scriptures to find some encouragement for this new mindset. I easily found exactly what I needed in the Book of Job. As someone who has experienced some pretty devastating circumstances...they are only a fraction of what Job experienced. I have to say...I admire Job!

He suffered the most devastating losses in his life. He lost all his children, his fortune, and even his friends. When Satan attempted to destroy Job's faith and trust in God...we find a grieving Job responding to the greatness of God, reflecting on the goodness of God, and refusing to assign guilt to God.  Job in all of his pain and heartache kept his integrity intact. How? He knew that God was enough for him ~ with or without all he valued.

When I recall Brad's responses as he battled cancer...I see in Brad so many of the same attributes Job had. Brad grieved his loss of health, his limited ability to lead our church family in worshiping Jesus, and knowing he was about to be separated from me by his death. Yet...Brad responded to God in trusting His greatness, reflecting on the goodness of God, and refusing to assign blame to God. Brad's integrity, like Job’s, remained intact. God was enough for him...with or without the things or people he valued and loved.

Unfortunately... I fell a bit short in all of these things during Brad's last days and after his death. I became doubtful of God’s goodness and I blamed Him for not saving my husband from such suffering...for I knew He had the power to have spared him from such pain.

Thankfully...in my brokenness...I also knew that God was the only One I could turn to and trust.  I still believed He loved me and I believed He was the only One who could truly help me. For I had learned through so many earlier trials and troubles that when all was said and done...God alone was enough for me. What I own and even the people I love often failed in one way or another but...God never does.

So I prayed and prayed...asking Him to reveal to my shattered heart that His love and faithfulness would fill my soul and give me a new heart that desired above all things...only Him. God is faithful..and He gave me this desire of my heart to love him more...

Job is a good model for the kind of believer I can also be. In Brad...I saw this kind of faith and trust in God being lived out.  I know I can trust God in the midst of severe and unexplainable circumstances. And...like Job, express my grief to God...for He wants to hear the cries of my heart too. There is healing in our tears when given into God’s care.

As I look back on the weeks and days leading up to Brad’s death, I recall how praising God in the storms brought relief to my troubling thoughts, and how trusting God’s goodness instilled hope, no matter what was to come.

These past few days leading up to September 1st, God has shown me I can choose to recall the past with dread...or remember the triumph I experienced through my testing with Jesus by my side.

I choose to remember the victories past.. and the victories yet to come. May the Lord open my eyes always to the absolute, all-sufficiency of Almighty God. He has brought beauty from the ashes of my despair. He is enough!

About Me

My photo
My life in Christ came a bit late in life.I grew up in a Christian home and was baptized at age 9. I enjoyed a long career as a flight attendant (1973-2005). I met my husband Brad, in 1984 while living in Tampa Florida. At the time, we both were living a lifestyle that was not pleasing to the Lord. We married in 1986, but it wasn't until early 1992 that I knew the Lord was calling me to Him. God placed this same desire in my husband's heart. As Brad and I grew in faith, so did our desire to serve God in ministry. In late 2002 we moved to Virginia Beach where the Lord called Brad to serve as a Worship minister. In 6 short months, Brad was diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkins lymphoma. I found my greatest moments of weakness came when I placed my thoughts on all the things that could go wrong and allowed fear to take hold. We were given 5 more years to share together. God is faithful and to His glory I serve Him through writing devotionals and inspirational article for this blog as well as a published writer with the writing team of A Widow's Might ministry. Our Devotional Books are titled: "For The Love of Her Life". I am also an Inspirational Speaker.
